Tai Sui(太歲)

22° AW2025 Collection — "Gathering of Loong  and Snakes" Eyewear Model "Tai Sui"

This October, the Gathering of Loong and Snakes assembles in Shibuya, Tokyo
#TokyoInternationalOpticalFair
#925Silver

Crafted by Hong Kong artisans, "Tai Sui" combines natural wood beads, snake bones, and 925 silver decorative elements with titanium-based temple arms, embodying the essence of Eastern craftsmanship. Staying true to the brand 22°'s philosophy of purity and simplicity, the design eliminates the need for screws, electroplating, nickel alloys, and soldering marks. By fusing sustainable polymers with titanium, the materials remain pristine and skin-friendly, weighing a quarter less than acetate. Wearing them feels like being enveloped by clouds—effortlessly lightweight.

Here are the main origins and evolution of the Tai Sui Star(太歲):

Origins in Astronomy and Astrology: The Year Star (Jupiter) and the Creation of "Tai Sui"

The concept of Tai Sui originated from ancient Chinese observations of planets, particularly Jupiter (known in ancient times as the "Year Star" or Suixing).

Year Star Chronology: The ancients observed that Jupiter completes a revolution around the celestial sphere approximately every 12 years (actually 11.86 years). As a result, they divided Jupiter’s orbit (the zodiac) into twelve equal sections, called the "Twelve Stations" (shier ci). Each year, Jupiter passed through one station, and the year was named accordingly, forming the "Year Star Chronology." For example, when Jupiter reached the station "Xingji," the year was referred to as "the year residing in Xingji."

· Emergence of Issues: Jupiter moves from west to east (consistent with modern astronomical observations), which was the opposite direction of the Twelve Earthly Branches (shi'er dizhi: zi, chou, yin, mao, etc.) and the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions (ershiba xiu), traditionally divided from east to west. This created practical inconveniences and potential errors in application.

· The Imaginary "Tai Sui太歲": To resolve this contradiction, ancient astrologers invented an imaginary celestial body that moved at the same speed as Jupiter but in the opposite direction. They called it "Tai Sui," "Suinyin," or "Taiyin." This imaginary Tai Sui moved uniformly along the direction of the Twelve Earthly Branches, advancing one position each year.
· Jupiter (Year Star): Moves from west to east (leftward rotation)
· Tai Sui: Moves from east to west (rightward rotation)

The snake is an ancient creature that has survived into modern times. When leaving this world, only snake bones remain. If fate allows, these bones can endure for millions of years, turning into fossils! Different cultures have cherished them, symbolizing longevity, good fortune, and auspiciousness to this day.

Indigenous American Culture

Crafting:Snake bones may be combined with other natural materials (like feathers and bark) to create intricate amulets.
Usage:They are used in healing rituals and celebrations, often accompanied by songs and dances to enhance their sacredness.

African Culture

Crafting:Snake bones are carefully decorated, possibly incorporating beads, herbs, or other materials to enhance their mystique.
Usage:Worn as amulets or used in significant rituals, such as coming-of-age ceremonies and harvest festivals.

European Folklore

Crafting:Snake bones are often simply cleaned and dried, then placed in prominent household locations, like doorways or windowsills.
Usage:They serve as talismans to ward off evil, utilized during specific festivals and celebrations to protect homes from malevolent forces.

South Asian Culture

Crafting:The cleaned and dried snake bones may be set into metal or fabric to create amulets.
Usage:Placed near altars during religious ceremonies, they are invoked for divine protection.

Chinese Culture

Crafting:Cleaned and dried snake bones are often strung together with red cords or metal chains.
Usage:Hung at doorways or worn during festivals and rituals, they are believed to ward off evil and bring good fortune.

Snake and Loong

Mythological Perspective:To transform into a Loong, a snake must accumulate over 3,000 years of cultivation and meet the stringent conditions of “heaven and earth’s spirit energy + karmic opportunities.”

Warring States to Qin and Han Dynasties:Philosophical integration and finalization of the Loong form (475 BC – AD 220)

1. Foundations of the I Ching(易經) :The theory states in "Zhou Yi, Commentary on the Appended Words": "The hibernation of the Loong and snake is for self-preservation," linking the snake's hibernation habits to the Loong's emergence, establishing a philosophical isomorphism in their life cycles.

2. Han Dynasty's Texts and Imperial
Mandates:The "Shang Shu Zhong Hou" mentions: "The red Loong bears the chart and bestows it to Yao," with Liu Bang being deified as "Red Emperor" who slays the white snake (the White Emperor). Thus, the snake officially becomes the earthly incarnation of the Loong.
Wang Chong in "Lun Heng" bluntly states: "Sometimes the dragon resembles the snake, and sometimes the snake resembles the Loong," reflecting the fluidity of their identities in popular perception.

As stated in "Bao Pu Zi 抱朴子": "Before transformation, the snake coils in the grass; once it becomes a Loong, it soars in the skies." This transformation lies in the hearts of the people, not in skin or bones.
